The intensity of it all, waiting for the moment when her state’s winner would be announced during election night in 2016.
Kierah Highsmith attended Georgia Southern University from 2013 to 2017. She graduated with
her Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism in May of 2017.
“That moment allowed me to learn more about politics and the Statesboro community,” Highsmith said of covering the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
Growing up, she consistently watched the Gilmore Girls, which inspired her to start writing. When Highsmith entered college, she started taking different types of writing classes to strengthen her skills.
One of her fondest memories from the Communication Arts Department is receiving the “person who best represented the department” award.
Throughout her college career, Highsmith struggled with her core classes but excelled in her major classes.
With the help of professors like Jennifer Kowalewski and Dean Cummings, she honed her craft and perfected her skills.
“I think everything that you do and everything that you learn is an asset,” Highsmith said.
Highsmith is currently a news producer at WJBF in Augusta, Georgia.
