Kathryn Burrell is a Georgia Southern University alumna who graduated in December 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater with minor in film studies. She spent some time after graduation as an assistant director to Lisa Abbott for William Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure production at Georgia Southern.

She is currently enrolled at Northern Arizona University pursuing a Master of Arts in communication with an emphasis in documentary film studies. Burrell is planning to earn an ethnic studies certificate as well.

After completing her master’s degree, Burrell wants to work for television networks like Discovery and Fox. She would also be interested in working in an institutional or educational setting for film studies.

“The Library of Congress has a really big collection too, and they initiate a certain number of films or pieces every year that are culturally significant,” Burrell said. “So, there’s a lot of things to do with that that involve education and communication with the public in terms of film and theater and things like that.”

Burrell is not as concerned with the production aspect of filmmaking as much as how films affect the audience.

“I’m more on the communications side of it, like, how deep people perceive this, and what kind of audiences do we target and the messages and timeliness and things like that,” Burrell said.

Burrell plans to eventually earn a Ph.D. in film studies.
