Balancing academics and finances is a common challenge for many college students, and Georgia Southern University is no exception. Engaging in a side hustle can provide additional income, valuable experience and networking opportunities.
Parker Byrd, a senior biology major, has started a pressure washing business back home in Warner Robins, Georgia, to earn extra money on the weekends.
“I started by going door to door and asking if any of my neighbors wanted me to pressure wash their driveways or houses,” said Byrd.
Byrd says he doesn't mind making the almost 2-hour drive to Warner Robins because he can make money and help his neighbors.
“It’s actually really satisfying too, getting to see the dirt and stains get washed away and leaving a clean white surface is cool and looks really nice,” said Byrd.
Carter McManus, a freshman sports management major, sells golf balls he finds on eBay and Facebook Marketplace.
“I find most of the balls at the Georgia Southern course, but also find a lot at my home course in Milledgeville,” said McManus.
He started collecting and reselling golf balls as a side hustle in high school and has continued the hobby since moving to Statesboro.
McManus says the business not only helps him make extra money but also keeps him connected to the game he loves.
“Some days I’ll find over 100 balls, especially after it rains,” he said. “It’s like a treasure hunt every time I go out.”
He cleans and sorts the balls by brand and condition before listing them online, where he often gets repeat buyers looking for affordable gear.
Georgia Southern students are finding ways to earn money while balancing their academics. With the right hustle, students can end their financial stress and even build skills that will benefit them long after college.
