Reynold's Rating: Nonna Picci Wood Fired Pizza

By: Juquetta Reynolds, Print Reporter

I experienced Nonna Picci Wood Fired Pizza with my friend, Day. I chose this restaurant because DJ, one of the magazine’s editors, said they have great pizza and beer.

Happy hour is every day from 3-6 p.m. They offer $6 pizzas and $2 beer. We had such a great time. We got there around 5:30 p.m. and left around 10:30 p.m. I would say we spent half of our time eating and talking and the other half in the arcade playing games and socializing.

For cocktails, Day ordered a Frose. It’s frozen and contains dry rose with strawberry and lime. It was sweet which was great because Rose can be bitter. I’m not a fan of dry wine and I enjoyed it. The sweetness of the strawberry complimented the Rose without overpowering it.

I ordered Nonna’s Hurricane. It’s frozen and contains light and dark rum with fresh juices and tropical Red Bull. The menu says frozen but it was more like a loose slushy.

For our appetizer, we ordered bruschetta. Tomatoes are still growing on me but I loved the Roma tomatoes! Day only ate one and I finished the rest. I even ate the tomatoes that had fallen off! The basil was refreshing and the balsamic glaze made it so flavorful. The sweet and savory from the glaze paired very well with the tomatoes and shredded parmesan cheese.

Day ordered the veg pizza. It comes with oven-roasted squash, zucchini, bell peppers, asparagus tips and capers with chopped kale, mozzarella and bechamel. Instead of bechamel, she chose marinara sauce. The veggies had a crunch but were still cooked tender. They were seasoned and paired very well with the cheese and crust.

I ordered the jerk chicken pizza. It comes with spicy jerk chicken, bell peppers, pineapples, onions, alfredo sauce and mozzarella. I wasn’t sure about the combination when I ordered it but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. I’m so glad I did! The chicken was seasoned perfectly. A kick of spice but not enough to make you clear your throat. The pineapples balanced well with the spice and onions and peppers.

I did not enjoy the cannolis. The presentation was pretty. The mascarpone filling was gritty instead of smooth. The dough seemed like it was fried a little too long.

Next time I want to mix the veg and jerk pizza. I also want to try the cucumber jalapeno margarita. I would have tried it this time but they were out of it.

Atmosphere

They actually have more outdoor seating than indoor. It is small on the inside with the bar and kitchen taking up a good bit of space. The patio had plenty of tables and is dog friendly. There is one side that is covered with a roof and the other side that has tables with individual umbrellas. We sat under an umbrella table so we could enjoy the sunny day. have a beautiful outdoor area.

The arcade was a lot of fun! It’s located in a separate building behind the restaurant and is dog friendly as well. We played air hockey, a shooting game with spiders as our targets, pool and a guitar playing simulation. There were plenty of other games. One side is a bar and the other side is the game room. There is also an outdoor bar. I enjoyed that you can grab good drinks and food and then walk to the back and have a good time.
